Homines Dicti Walser

English version

Homines Dicti Walser

A film by Swan Bergman · Artistic supervision by Yann Arthus-Bertrand (HUMAN) · Original music by Armand Amar · Made by NEW DESIGN MOVIE · Produced by Forte di Bard

A documentary on the language, identity and traditions of the Walser communities of the Alps, told in their own voices, in their own language.

The documentary

Homines Dicti Walser is a documentary on the language, identity and traditions of the Walser communities of the Alps, with a focus on the Monte Rosa area and the Aosta Valley.

Through first-hand testimonies, portraits and personal stories, the film explores the soul of a people who have preserved an extraordinary culture for centuries, deeply bound to the mountains.

At its heart is the Walser language, a heritage of Germanic origin and one of the most significant elements of these communities' identity, whose transmission to new generations is today a crucial challenge.

The film portrays the people who keep this heritage alive: their words, memories, traditions, everyday gestures and their bond with a land that shaped their history. The result is a deeply human story, in which language is not just a means of communication but the very voice of a community, the link between generations and the living testimony of a unique identity.

The original language: a heritage to preserve

The testimonies were filmed and recorded in the original language of the Walser communities, keeping the protagonists' authentic voices and making them accessible through subtitles.

Each testimony thus also becomes a linguistic record, preserving pronunciations, expressions, intonations and ways of storytelling that belong to the collective memory of these peoples.

Spoken by fewer and fewer people, the Walser language is an intangible cultural heritage whose survival cannot be taken for granted. Preserving these voices means safeguarding not only the words of a minority language, but the way a people has understood the world, handed down its experiences and built its identity.

In this sense the film is also an audiovisual archive of Walser linguistic and cultural memory, whose value will grow over time.

The link with Yann Arthus-Bertrand's HUMAN

The documentary was made with the artistic supervision of Yann Arthus-Bertrand — photographer, filmmaker and author of the international film project HUMAN (2015) — and with original music by Armand Amar, composer of the HUMAN score.

HUMAN explores the human condition through more than 2,000 interviews in some 60 countries, alternating close-ups of people telling their lives with aerial images of the planet. Homines Dicti Walser shares this sensibility: the protagonists tell their own identity, with no external narrator.

The film's images and audiovisual material are kept in the HUMAN project archive, giving the Walser testimonies an international dimension within a heritage devoted to cultural diversity and the memory of humankind.

Public screenings

Completed in 2016, the film was presented in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, at the heart of the lands historically inhabited by the Walser:

16 July 2016 — screening at the Sporthaus cinema in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, organised by the Forte di Bard: the first public screening.

3 December 2016 — screening during the Walseroabe cultural evening in Gressoney-Saint-Jean.

10 November 2017 — screening at the Sporthaus Auditorium in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, promoted by the Presidency of the Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley with the Municipality and the Pro Loco.

Historical and cultural value

Preserving the language: testimonies recorded in the original language are an authentic audiovisual record of expressions whose transmission is increasingly fragile.

Safeguarding traditions: through the protagonists' experiences, the film gathers memories, customs and knowledge of the centuries-old bond between the Walser communities and the mountains.

The universal dimension of memory: the story of one Alpine community becomes a reflection on cultural identity and the responsibility to pass it on. Because when a language risks disappearing, it is not only its words that are threatened, but an irreplaceable part of human memory.
