Tischlbongarisch

Tischlbongarisch

A documentary by Swan Bergman · Produced by NEW DESIGN MOVIE

In a world where minority languages face oblivion every day, “Tischlbongarisch” gives voice to Timavese, the language of Timau, through the stories, memories and experiences of the people who still speak it.

Synopsis

In a world where minority languages face the threat of oblivion every day, “Tischlbongarisch” is a living celebration of the Timavese language: a heritage rich in history, culture and identity, kept alive by a small community in the mountains of Carnia.

The documentary takes the viewer into the heart of the community of Timau and tells the story of the language through the personal stories, memories and experiences of the people who speak it. People of different ages and backgrounds share their accounts, and Timavese reveals itself in all its richness, in its everyday use as well as in its emotional nuances.

Narrative approach

The interviews were filmed in a theatre. The choice is deliberate: the stage offers an intimate space that amplifies the voice of the storytellers and builds an empathic bridge between them and the audience, inviting the viewer into an immersive, personal experience.

The interviews alternate with aerial and ground footage of the places that symbolise Timavese culture. Drone shots and traditional camera work place the language in its landscape, revealing the deep bond between language, territory and identity.

Why this film

A language lives as long as someone speaks it — and as long as it can reach new listeners. “Tischlbongarisch” was made to preserve Timavese and make it known: a living testimony, a historical document that safeguards this heritage for future generations.

By portraying people and places, the film celebrates not only the language but also the sense of community and belonging it embodies, and raises awareness of one of the many languages in the world at risk of disappearing.

Audience and distribution

With subtitles in Italian and English, the documentary is accessible to an international audience. It is aimed at broadcasters and cultural channels, streaming platforms, documentary and mountain film festivals, schools, universities and institutions working to protect minority languages and cultural heritage.

The project

The film was made with the contribution of experts in linguistics and cultural history and with state-of-the-art filming technology: a work of cultural and social relevance, a journey through time and space to rediscover and honour one of the countless voices of our world.
